RATING ACT
VACANT DWELLINGS AN AMENDING BILL (From “The Mail’s” Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, sth August. An amendment to tho Rating Act, introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr 11. G. It. Mason (Labour, Auckland Suburbs), seeks to repeal the present provision for the rebate of half rates on vacant dwelling houses. Mr Mason states that suburban local bodies in Auckland arc anxious for tho repeal, sinco tho present provision makes the burden very severe on tho remaining properties. Northcote borough had a Court case on the section a year or two ago, but failed. It is pointed out by Mr Mason .that the Bill will also repeal the section which caused trouble in Mount Albert upon tho coming into existence of rating on unimproved values. This was merely formal, sinco the Court of Appeal subsequently decided that the section was of no effect.
