INSPECTION BY THE BOARD TO BE MADE NEXT WEEK The Hon.. H. Atmore, Minister _of Education, has received the following letter from the General Manager of Railways (Mr H. H. Sterling):— “I am directed to inform you that the Government Railways Board proposes to go over the route of the Kawatiri-Inan-gahua and Te Kuha-Inangahua railways on 13th August. The Bogrd will travel from Nelson on the morning of Thursday, 13th August, and will journey via Murchison and Inangahua to Westport, leaving the latter place' the following morning for Greymouth via Inangahua and Stillwater. “The purpose of the Board is to view the nature of the country that would be served by th& lines,. and, generally to acquaint itself with any local features associated with the lines. The Board wishes to say that it does not desire, any public functions associated with its visit. The Board will be willing to receive any representations that might be made to it regarding the railways by writing addressed to the General Manager of Railways at Wellington. An advertisement to this effect is being inserted, in the local newspapers. “The Board will be unable, on the occasion of its visit, to receive any oral representations on the matter of the railways, but if any local body or person interested desires to amplify, by personal representations, any written statement which may be submitted,. tlie Board will be pleased to endeavour to arrange to give any such body or person' an opportunity of coming before it subsequently in Wellington. ' ; “A communication is being sent to the chairmen of the Waimea, Murchison and’ Inangahua County Councils, and the Board is pleased to leave in your hands the matter of advising any other bddies in your district that 'you' might/tKibk appropriate.” -• ■ ■ PROMPT ACTION BY PROGRESS LEAGUE The notification of the impending visit, of the Railway Board to this.district appeared on the day of the-.recent meeting of the Progress League and that body knew nothing of it until after the conclusion of the. meeting. Upon becoming aware of the intended visit, the newly appointed Emergency Committee immediately set to work on the prepara-, tion of the case to be submitted: to the Board. Much work has been done during the last- few davs and application has already been made to allow the League to supplement the written statement by oral evidence on the Board’s return to Wellington from the West Coast. Some members of the Board .will arrive, in Nelson bn the 32th .ard others on the morning of the 13th, -when the whole party will proceed up the line at 8.30 a.m.
