OBITUARY

DR. <i. GOSSET 6 News has boon received in Sumner of (lie death of Dr- G. Cosset, oil 10th May, :il, Wellington Hospital, England (reports Hie "Press”). I>r. Cosset, with Mrs Cosset and Master Jlilgrove, left, Sumner, where they had resided for about 20 years, early last December. After spending Christmas with liis daughter, Mrs S. Wiggins, of Nelson, Dr. Cosset and his family left for England early in the- New Year, on a pleasure' trip. Dr. Cosset was the son of the llov. I. 11. Cosset, vicar of Norham, North Devon, and was born in 1048. He was educated at Bishop's Hull, Taunton, and after six years at i'tton, went to Cambridge, where he look his B.A. degree ill 1870, following this with his M.A. and M.B. degrees in 1876. After practising for some time, in Abingdon, Berkshire, be came to New Zealand and settled in Lceston in 1883.

Following the footsteps of his father, who introduced the. game of golf into Devonshire, Dr. Cosset became an original member of the Royal North Devon Coif Club in 1864, and in 1871 as a member of the Royal .Liverpool Club, won that club’s cold medal at Iloylake. Immediately upon his arrival in New Zealand, ho actively interested himself in this game, and won the New Zealand golf championship in 1895.

In Leeslon he. practised for many years, took an active interest in Freemasonry, and became a. past master of Lodgo Waihora. Me was closely associated with the affairs of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association.

On his retirement to Sumner about 1910 lie became an active member of the Croquet, the Coif, and the Sumner Rowling Club. lie was a foundation member and past president of the Rowling Club, a. past president and life member of the Croquet Club, and a. life member of the Richmonu Ilin Gold Club. Dr. Cosset was twice married, first to Miss Gharlcwood, daughter of Admiral Cluirlewood, and second lo Miss Rennie, daughter of Mr John Rennie, of Lceston, who survives him.

During his long stay in Sumner, his genial, sympathetic personality won him many staunch friends, and his unexpected death has come as a painful surprise to many residents.
