The last performance of the “Messiah” in London under Handel’s direction was given by a chorus of twenty-three, and an orchestra of thirty-three. Bach’s choir in St. Thomas’s, ’ Leipsic, for which he wrote his “J’assions” and cantatas, numbered twelve, three to each part.
