FARMERS’ UNION

(To the Editor) ■SSr—With 'your 'paper publishing the annual reports of the various branches of the Farmers’ Union farmers should be able to judge whether the Union’s past activities, justify their continued support. Farmers have to contend with both agricultural find commercial parasites. The latter the Farmers’ Union should deal with and see that they get good value for their money and products. Judging by annual reports, which speak of only “depression,” the following important matters have not been dealt with: The futility and inactivity of the Power Board. (The ratepayers are entitled to reports of proceedings from time to time.) The failure of the Waimea County Council to reduce its wages by, 10 per cent., in conformity with other counties, and their imposition of the 10 per cent penalty for overdue rates. The present slow and expensive revaluing of the county which at the present rate of three guineas and two properties per day will prove most expensive. , . ; y One branch is attempting to launch a Country Party but with the above omissions before them, farmers must realise that as the Union has failed to deal with and improve County omissions and faults it appears childlike to attempt bigger things. Farmers should ask themselves the question: "What are the advantages accruing to members of the Union, and do these, if any, justify their further subscriptions in these times of depression ?” 1 am etc., JONATHAN.
