THE EXPORT SEASON PROBABLY A RECORD WorX oil export fruit in many of the sheds is drawing to a close. Next week will see many orcliardists enjoying a day or two’s rest alter the great rush that has been going on for the last two months. The season of 1931 will no doubt put up another record for export fruit. Your correspondent has been informed on tbe very best authority that already the figures of the port are well over Lite quarter of a million mark, and the season promises to close with round about 300,000 cases of export fruit. Should this bo so, and a fair price is returned to the orcliardists, then the whole district of Nelson will receive much benefit thereby. The young people no doubt will be pleased because usually at the end of tlie season tile main sheds wind up with a dance. Already Tasman Central are making preparations Tor their annual dance, and others will no doubt follow. MEN’S CLUB Last Wednesday evening Mr Carling, of Tasman, gave an address on Joan of Arc. There were between 50 and 60 present. The address proved very instructive. Mr Carling traced “The -Maid’s” life, from its earliest days when tending her father’s docks she heard ‘‘the voices” that called upon her to free her country from the hands of the English, right up to the accomplishment of that purpose, and then on to the final stages, the trial and condemned as a witch to be finaly burned at the stake. The Rev. Mr Dodds was in the chair, and a hearty vote of thanks and appreciation was passed to Mr Carling by acclamation. The next subject will bo a debate on “Has Democracy Succeeded?” The'affirmative will be taken by Mr Harcus of Tasmas. The negative will be taken by Mr Fryer of the Wharf staff. The debate will be held on Wednesday evening, the 13th. If it can be arranged, Dr. Askew, of the Cawthron Institute, will give an address before the club next Saturday evening. All arc invited.
