BUSINESS PREMISES BROKEN INTO

TWO GROCERY SHOPS ENTERED During the week-end two grocery businesses in Nelson —P. Howcroft’s, Hardy street, and W. Smith’s. Nile street East—were broken into. When Mr Howcroft opened the front door of his shop he noticed a draft of fresh air and on investigation found a window at the back of the shop open with a pane of glass broken out. There was £1 worth of change, in the till at the time, but it was not touched. At present it is thought that goods have been stolen, hut "the quantities cannot be ascertained. No large quantity of any particular line of goods has been taken.

At the other place entered by thieves, in Nile street, entrance was attempted through a side window which was broken. hut as access could not be gained through it, the glass in a door at the back of the shop was broken and an entrance made by that way. From this shop £5 in cash and 30s in stamps was taken from the safe which was -locked on Saturday afternoon, and was still locked this morning. Tobacco' to the value of £2 was stolen, in addition to other articles.
