REVOLT IN PERU
REBELS CAPTURE AREQUIPA 'United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LIMA (Peru), 22nd February. Aeroplanes and reservists were mobilised to-day to quell an uprising in Southern Peru menacing the Government of provisional President Cerro. With 1 lie strict censorship effective it is impossible to confirm reports that the entire southern half of the country is in revolt, but the Government admitted that the city of Arequipa was captured by revolting troops on Friday night, several loyal officials being killed in defence. Troops are now marching to Arequipa to crush the rebellion. RETIREMENT FROM ELECTION (Received 24th February, 11.10 a.m.) LIMA, 23rd February. Luis Cerro, provisional President of Peru,' on Monday withdrew his candidacy for election as president.
