VISITING FIREMEN

ARRANGEMENTS FOR ENTERTAINING A meeting of the Citizens Committee which has in hand the arrangements for entertaining the delegates to the Fire Brigades’ Conference to he held at Nelson commencing on Bth March, was held in the Council Chambers. The chairman (Mr G. P. Russell) said he was sure Nelson would rise to the occasion and make the stay of the delegates a pleasant one. The importance of this year’s conference was considerably added to owing to the new problems arising out of the disastrous earthquakes in the Hawkos Bay districts.

Mr Walter Black was elected secretary and Mr Scantlebury assistant secretary. The following committees were formed : Finance: The Hon. W. W. Snodgrass, M.L.C., Messrs A. L. Dee, I. W. Huggins and Newman; catering: The Chairman and Captain Bennett; transport: Messrs J. Newman, W. Gould and W. M. Keech; entertainment: Messrs J. Stuart, F. W. Huggins, I. Tunnicliffe and F. Norgate. The programme submitted from the public meeting was approved, subject to necessary alterations. The chairman stated that a letter had been sent to the City Council asking for a subscription. The Hon. W. W. Snodgrass donated £2 2s. The secretary was instructed to write the Hon. 11. Atmore, Minister of Education, and Hon. W. W. Snodgrass inviting them to accompany the Mayor to the conference to welcome the visiting fireman.

It was decided that the next meeting be held on Wednesday, 25th inst,, at 4.30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
