AMERICANS AT WELLINGTON CARLTON DEFEATS SIMPSON (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. The athletic events staged by the Wellington centre of the Amateur Athletic Association, attracted a crowd of 7000 spectators. The visiting American athletes were seen in action. James Carlton, the crack Australian sprinter, came over specially to meet George Simpson, of U.S.A., and he scored great wins in the two invitation sprint events. A heavy northerly was blowing and very materially affected the times. All the sprints were run against the head wind. Carlton won two great races in the special 100 yards and 220 yards, in 10 2-5 and 22 1-5 sec. Simpson was second in the shorter event, and collapsed in the concluding stages of the furlong with a strained leg muscle.

Rufus Kiser, the middle distance runner, was beaten by Bayne, Wellington provincial champion, in a fast mile and came last in the half mile. Harlow Rothert, the American captain, won the shot putting event with a fine throw that broke the existing Australian and New Zealand record by 5 feet 1 inch'.

Kroger’s Australian pole vault record at the Victoria track championships. His leap was 11 feet llg inches. In the shot putt A. Mclntosh beat his own record by almost a foot, namely 44 feet inches.
