LORD BIRKENHEAD’S ESTATE
“IMMENSE UNCALCULATING GENEROSITY” -FRIENDS ASSIST FAMILY (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 18th February. The “News-Chronicle” says Lord Birkenhead left a net estate of £SOOO, excluding a country house near Ban-: 1 ;! bury Cross. The estate would have been much larger, but he owed £20,000 income tax, which is offset by £30,000 life insurance. Lord Birkenhead latterly received a substantial income from directorships, but lived generously. He acted with immense uncalculating liberality towards liis friends and all persons seek- " ing help. This has resulted in liis family being. , left poorly provided for. In recognition of liis public services and affection for himself and his family, many wellknown people have provided a fund, organised by Mr Churchill, who was a close friend of Lord Birkenhead. The contributors include Lord Inchcape, the Duke of Westminster, Lord Beaver- ' brook and Mr Purbrick of Melbourne, who each gave £SOOO. The fund .exceeds, the total similarly subscribed on behalf of Lord Oxford and other impoverished public men. Lord Birkenhead’s heir is' 1 at present at- Oxford, and is arranging to write w a book on his father’s life.
