ON THE RANGE

NELSON DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB Tn anticipation of tlie Irvine Shield .competition on Tuesday, the ,Nelson Defence Rifie Club fired two ten-shot matches at 300 yards last Saturday. Quite a number were unable to be present owing to the fact that winter sports arc in evidence. The team to represent the Nelson Boys’ College was on the mound and put in a satisfactory practice. It consists of 11. V. Soarle, K. Inwood, C. W. Johnson and two youthful riflemen, Stocker and Robertson (pupils of the College), who acquitted themselves creditably.

The shooting in the first scries was only moderate owing to the changing light as the sun disappeared; but in the second , series when the sun was gone, and the light more even the scores improved out of sight. F. Sharland, who was working at the butts getting targets ready for the Milroy Shield, put up the best performance; but was barred from taking the trophy on aecount’of not shooting in the first series. In his usual sporting mannei' ho classed his shoot as a practice, leaving K. Inwood the leg-in and the trophy presented by Mr T. A. H. Field, this being liis third leg-in. If Sharland had competed with the rest in the first scries lie would probably have Avon the trophy himself as he had the previous leg-in, but this seems to be the penalty for doing too much rvork on the range. L. Dixon in hia second shoot narrowly missed Mr E. J. Squire’s trophy for the first 7 consecutive bulls. He got a string of six and missed the seventh by a Avhisker, but got the bull/j again in his next shot. Sharland missed it by a fraction, getting tivo bulls, an inner, and 4 bulls to finish.
