At Trafalgar Park on Saturday, Pirates defeated Rivals by a “polled goal and a penalty goal to an unconverted try. The game was very evenj territorially, and Rivals nearly crossed! the line more Ilian once. j

Tho teams lined up as follows.:— Pirates—Brownlie, Sixtus, Higgins, Baldwin, Bryant, Shuttleworth, Max, Hunt, 'Fowler, Baigent, Palmer, Newman, Buckley, Eden and Kearns. Rivals —Howat, Wilson, Doubleion, Snowden, Orudis, Bennett, Goodman, Byrne, Turner, Thomson, Bovcs, Green, Piiscoe, Biggs and Glover. From the commencement Rivals attacked vigorously. Newman carried play into Rivals’ territory with a strong run down the touch line. A free kick for Rivals sent the country team back, and from a line out Howat clashed over to score Rivals’ first and only try in the first ten minutes. It was well out from the post and Cnulis failed to convert.

Rivals 3, Pirates 0. Stirred on by this early reverse Pirates rushed up the field, and Rivals were penalised in front of tho posts. Newman kicked successfully. Pirates 3, Rivals 3.

Rivals pressed hard ,and a “pot” by one of their players just missed. From a scrum the ball travelled along the Rival backs to Glover, centre, who sent away a forward pass. Thomson made a short punt and Bucklev took the hall, but Rivals resisted "the attack. Orudis failed with a free kick on the 25 line. Turner worked the blind side, of the scrum ancl kicked well up. Eden returned the kick. Biggs failed to take the ball on the full and Shuttleworth, following up fast, looked like scoring, but he overran the ball. Newman’s free kick from nearly halfway fell short. Max hroko through near the line, transferred to Buckley, who sent a reverse pass to Max, hut the latter was held up by the Rival pack. In the second spell Higgins and Sixtus did not appear for ~ Pirates, and Bowers donned a black and white jersey. Orudis saved when Pirates attacked, and Glover, with a chance to increase Rivals’ score, missed the goal from a penalty. The Pirate backs threw the ball about for a while without effect. Bowers nearly fought his way over the line, but was held up. However, he scored soon after by “potting” a goal from a ruck under the posts. Pirates 7, Rivals 3. The Rival backs started several rushes, with Glover prominent, but Green was well marked. Fowler sent the ball out smartly from a scrum to Palmer on the wing, who reversed to Max, who was forced out by the Rival forwards. ‘The Pirate forwards having taken the ball to near the goal line, Fowler passed to Kearns, who cut in and nearly dived over. Rivals took play down to the other end of the fielld, and just before time each back handled, but Green was forced out near the corner. There was no further score before ■time sounded. Mr Croucher refereed.
