CORPORAL PUNISHMENT
INSTRUCTIONS TO TEACHERS (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) INVERCARGILL, 31st May. The Southland Education Board passed the following resolution on the infliction of corporal punishment in schools: “The board takes a serious viif.v of the misuse of corporal punishment, and expects teachers to understand and observe the correct relationship of such form of punishment to tho government of a school. The hoard realises that corporal punishment may at times be necessary, but holds the view that if its practice is frequent, this is in almost all cases a sign, either that the teacher has, the wrong kind of personality or that his personality is not functioning as it should. For-the purposes of record, head and sole teachers are required to ihave all cases of corporal punishment? 1 duly detailed in a book provided for the purpose. This register is to be con-sidered-as a school record. The head teacher may delegate to, or with-hold from, his assistants authority to inflict corporal punishment, except that in no case shall such authority be given to a probationer.” v
