SCULLING
WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP PHELPS DEFEATS BARRY (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 31st May. For the world’s sculling championship Ted Phelps easily defeated Barry by a distance. Tlifcre was intense interest in what proved to be a one-sided contest, and the crowd lined both sides of the Thames. Ted Plielpsy who helped to train Pearce for the Olympic Games, won the championship in 28 minutes 5 secs. He was leading nearly all the way. He is a son of the well-known sculler Bossy Phelps. There was a following wind and a smooth river. Barry showed signs of distress at Devonshire Meadows, the accompanying launches slackening speed in order to keep behind him. Phelps was fifteen lengths ahead at Chiswick Steps and twenty at Barnes Bridge, to finish 23 lengths ahead.
