HIKURANGI CROSSING TRAGEDY

CHARGE AGAINST BUS DRIVER (By Telegraph—Press Association) WHANGAREI, This Day. The inquest concerning the McLeod Flat level crossing tragedy on the evening of sth April, when a train and a bus' collided, resulting in the death of six bus passengers, opened to-day. Noel Herbert Wilkinson, driver of the bus, was charged with negligently driving the, bus, thereby causing the six deaths. Evidence at the inquest and the case against Wilkinson are being taken simultaneously. Riobert Menzies, assistant engineer, Public Works Department, stated that standing on the crossing and facing Whangarei a train was visible for 45 chains. A bus driver coming from Hikurangi at a point 51 chains from the crossing had a vision of 41 chains. He visited the locality at night time and through a wet windscreen could see an approaching train without difficulty. Speaking as a motorist he did not consider the crossing to be dangerous.
