LACK OF PROVISIONS News of. the plight of the remaining 32 inhabitants of the lonely island of St. Hilda, in the Outer Hebrides, was received recently from a trawler. The captain reported that while fishing near the island he saw a small boat approaching containing a number of islanders along with a nurse who has now been on the island two years. He was told of the dire condition of the islanders, through lack of provisions, and immediate help was requested. The captain gave the islanders the whole of his stock of potatoes and vegetables. The captain of the trawler said, lhe islanders are now living on meal and water. The potato crop was a total failure owing to frost, and communication with the outside world has been impossible owing to a breakdown in the wireless installation.”
