NELSON LICENSING COMMITTEE

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Nelson Licensing Committee was hold to-day. There were present: Messrs T. E. Maunsejl, S/M- (chairman), H. Saunders, G. Marison, F. W. Twiss, T. Pettit, and J. A. Stringer. Inspector Lewin represented the Police and Mr IT. Coltmau, health inspector, appeared for the Health Department. Two applications for the renewal of publicans* licenses in respect to the Brightwater Hotel and the Tasman Hotel were adjourned for a month to allow repairs to be carried out, and those relating to the Post Boy Hotel and the Turf Hotel were adjourned pending the erection of new buildings. All the others were granted. Plans for the new Turf Hotel were approved subject to certain minor alterations.

A discussion arose over one application as repairs had not been carried out at the hotel. It appeared that no instructions had been issued to the licensee or owner.

Mr IT. Cheek explained that at present dual reports were issued, one from the Health Department- and one from the inspector of licensed premises. These made two sets of requirements. The two departments had no collaboration. The Inspector of Police also pointed out that trouble was caused by the.dual control. He said that, in the cities the Health Officer was only concerned with the sanitary arrangements and inspection of food, while the police inspected the buildings. Mr Coltman said he was agreeable to submit his report on hotels to the police for perusal. One transfer was granted. Three wholesale licenses were also renewed. ..... .. .
