THE RACING DESCRIBED
MURIEL DE ORO’S PAPARUA HANDICAP (By Telegraph—Special to “The Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, 31st May. In Hie Paparua Handicap, the big race at the Canterbury Parlt’ Trotting Club’s Meeting to-day, the public selections were Muriel de’Oro, The Vendoine —The Shrew bracket, and the Avenger —Omaha bracket. When Muriel de Oro cleared out at six furlongs from home to place a six lengths’ advantage over her nearest attendant Pageant, it appeared that F. G. Holmes had made his run prematurely. However, just when Jean McElwyn, The Shrew and Vendoine appeared to have her measure, she shot away again to score cleverly by a length from The Shrew. While Muriel de Oro’s two mile runs latterly have not been convincing her race at Oamaru was all she needed to come again into the command of the distance, and this was aided by clever driving tactics to-day. The Shrew stayed on better than Jean McElwyn and Vendome in the final issue, displaying more stamina than was noticeable in her Dunedin engagement, when she faded out in a- good position two furlongs from home. Avenger failed to race on after being prominent throughout. Pageant was in no condition to hold the pace he attempted. Talent was always well placed but never flattered his handicap, while Mawhariti raced only in patches. Daphne de Oro went a fine race without ever looking a winner.
RECORD CROWD EXPECTED FOR OTAKI OTAKI, This Day. The race track is in excellent condition for the meeting to-morrow and a record crowd is expected. , FIFA PENALISED DUNEDIN, This Day. Fifa has been penalised 24 yards in the St. Clair Handicap at the Forbury trots.
