MOTOR CYCLES AND NOISES

(To the Editor) Sir, —-Motor cycles are becoming more numerous and motor cyclists arc* becoming more ami more nuisance and a source of grave danger and annoyance lo all who use (lie highways'and others 100. I think the time is fully ripe when much more stringent conditions regarding tlic granting of licences should ho imposed. It is not enough that the! applicant for a licence should ho able to pass a few perfectly easy tests in controlling the machine. Something should be known about the character of the man himself ami his antecedents and .a substantial super-tax should bo imposed upon all who require to use their machines say between 11 p.m. and 6 ,i.ni. The noise at night time is fast becoming intolerable —particularly to tho aged and to the sick. Complaint has freqently been, made about- the fearful up roar going on at all hours of the night and in the. early morning hours on that stretch of the Waimea road adjacent to the Nelson Hospital. Pointed complaint was made a few weeks ago and it was hoped that those responsible would show some little human pity for the patients in that large institution. The very reverse has been the experience as the writer learned in the hospital to-day. Tli noise all through tho night and upon frequent occasions is indeed terrible, so much so indeed that one would he excused for thinking that a great deal of it is deliberately planned. The apprehension of these miscreants is I know difficult and Nelson is not the only place that suffers. It would appear that this infliction is general, but- something surely can be evolved. Closer attention to the character of the rider—and a very close supervision of the sale of second hand machines should he paid by the authorities. Our laws regarding t lie sale and re sale of fire-arms ire strict —and .iifstly so—and the same sort of scrutiny should prevail regarding motor machines. I am etc., READER. Nelson, 9th April.
