NELSON ASSOCIATION BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING DONATION OF CHALLENGE GUI’

The 27tli annual 'general meeting of the Nelson Hockey Association was held in the Institute last evening. Mr R. J. B. Smith presided over a good attendance of delegates. The report was presented as follows: Opening of Season.—The season was officially opened with an all-sports gathering at Trafalgar Park when the Rugby Union, Football Association and Hockey Association combined, the proceeds of the dny being devoted to the funds for lighting Trafalgar Park. The day proved quite successful,- serving to bring the various codes together and to present to the public, games which they do not otherwise come in contact with.

Club membership.—There wore six men’s clubs affiliated to tho Association, five teams being entered for the senior and five for the junior championship. There were four ladies’ clubs affiliated exclusive of the Golden Bay sub-associ-ation, which conducted a series of matches in the Takaka-Collingwood district. Six teams were entered for the ladies’ championship. The schools’ championship proved increasingly popular, it being found necessary to divide the competition into two grades during tho year. Championships.—The senior championship was won by the Kiwi Club, which also won the junior. In the ladies’ championship Rewa and Riwaka A were level on points at the end of the season’s play and as it was found impossible to arrange a deciding game the clubs were bracketed as winners. Auckland Point proved to be the winners of the schools’ championship after a close competition. Six-a-side Tournaments. —The annual men’s six-a-side ‘tournament was held on 3rd June, the winners being Kiwi (senior) and Wesley (junior). On the first Monday in August the ladies’ and schools’ tourneys were played when Rewa and Hampden street were the successful teams. The Greig Cup for ladies’ relay race was won by Rewa. Charity Cup. —Kiwi again proved,, the winners of this competition.' Representative Teams.—During the year several representative games were played! The senior team journeyed to Blenheim to meet the representatives of the-newly revived Marlborough Association and again played them at Nelson at a later date. Nelson woh both games. Our junior representatives also played the Marlborough Association’s B team both at Nelson and Blenheim, both games being won by Nelson. Ladies' representative matches were played against Golden Bay at T’akaka and Marlborough both at Blenheim and Nelson. Grounds. —The grounds-. at the Botanical Reserve have been in fair order 'this season except for a spell in the middle of winter -when continued rain converted the playing area into some-

thing resembling a hog. One additional playing field has been secured at_ Pioneer Park, the surface of which is in fair condition considering the, fact that tho turf is newly sown and the great amount of wet weather experienced during tho season. Finance.—A perusal of the balance sheet will disclose a decided loss on the soason'dkworking, despite the lad that the committee has been most careful in its expenditure. Owing lo <liefact that the game has practically no following from the public it is found necessary to rely almost entirely on club foes for the finance needl'd to carry on. It is hoped, however, that by providing clean and interesting games we may again secure a share of public support and thus help to case matters financially. Thanks. —The committee wishes to place on record its appreciation and thanks to the members of the [lackey Referees’ Association for their efficient controlling of games, chaperones and managers of representative teams, donors of subscriptions for their continued support, the Press for publishing accounts of matches Rind meetings, advertisers for 4 utilising space on programmes, and Mr R. A. Thomas for posting fixtures and results on the notice board. We feel we cannot close this report without reference to the departure from Nelson of Mr E. Davidson, who has been connected with the Association for the past seven years. We will miss his services aiul wish him every success in his new sphere of work.

. CORRESPONDENCE The Wesley Club applied for permission to change tho club name to Wakatu. This was granted. Tho delegate to the New Zealand Hockey Association was instructed to vote in favour of the Bush sub-association being affiliated, the territory under its control being the counties of Mauriceville, Eketaluina, Pahiatua. Akitio, and Woodville; also for the control of the county of Horowhenua being transferred from Manawatu to Wellington.
