THREE MONTHS' GAOL FOR THEFT

At the .Magistrate's Court this morning before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., Charles Matthew O'Malley, aged 49 years, was charged with the theft of a suitcase and contents valued at £3 10s, the property of Michael Kearns. Constable Lines, for the police, said accused, in 'company with Kearns and a man named Martini ;vvas on the Nelson railway station. Accused asked Kearns to purchase a ticket and while he was away O'Malley stole the suitcase, which he "planted" in a whate behind the Railway boarding house. Accused pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. OBTAINING MONEY BY FRAUD William Raskin, aged 19,years, was charged that with intent io defraud he obtained from William Rowling of Riwaka £lO by falsely representing that his father was lying seriously ill at Midhurst and wished to go to see him. Constable Andrews, of Motueka, said that after obtaining a cheque for the amount accused cashed it at the Riwaka hotel, where he paid his board, and then returned to Motueka, where he paid accounts and bought clothes. Accused, who pleaded guilty, wished to be dealt with by the Magistrate, and was sentenced to twelve months' probation and given two months to make restitution of the £lO to Rowling.
