DAMAGE BY FIRE
A DWELLING DESTROYED , OCCUPANTS' NARROW ESCAPE

INVERCARGILLV'This Day. ■' j About 4 o'clock this'morning & sevenroomed wooden house situated in East road, owned and occupied by F. W. Ellis,,'a well-known racehorse trainer, was totally destroyed by fire. The house was occupied only by Ellis and two boys at the time of the outbreak. They were able to snatch a few clothes only before escaping from the building, which .was hlazing fiercely when the occupants awoke. The house was sheltered from the westerly wind by a high belt of trees, and this fact, together with thW'efforts of a bucket brigade, prevented the fire from spreading to several stables and outhouses, which were adjacent to the main building. Since tho residence was outside the boundary of the Invercargill fire brigade's activities there -was no means of'subduing the blaze, and the house was soon razed to the ground and nothing whatever saved. The building was covered by £9OO insurance and the contents by £4OO. UNOCCUPIED COTTAGE BURNED GISBORNE, This Day. Fire destroyed an unoccupied cottage I owned by Mrs M. Mahon, at Mangapapa. Pumping from a large ponl'ueaiby the brigade effected a good save cv-r-.-fining the damage to the roof and rsar portion. FURNITURE FACTORY DESTROYED BRISBANE, This Day. Damage to the extent of £20,000 resulted from a fire which destroyed Coleman's furniture factory, and a large residence adjoining, in the west end of the city.
