THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF NELSON

(To the Editor) Sir.—A 'correspondent who knew Nelson as a girl and who has travelled since from 'Frisco to New York and from Cleveland near Canada to New Orleans in the south of the United States, wrote me not long ago that nowhere had she found such a collection of natural beauty as is to be found in and around the city of Nelson —a rare collection of beauty of mountains and hills, or river, of sea, and foreshore and beach. Nelson should be famed not only as an educational centre but as a satisfaction and delight to all who care for scenery. One needs perhaps to live away from it and return at frequent intervals to appreciate it best. Jt strikes one afresh every time. Having half an hour to spare before the Post Office opened at 9 a.m., I, on a sunny morning, and with the aid of a bicycle, tried how many bridges and the scenes from them I could enjoy in half an hour. I lingered on five, and then had some time to spare! In.time to come it will bo the lovely scenes from Nelson's bridges that will attract the artist and the lover of scenery. From each bridge is to bo seen some different aspect of river bank and stream while Trafalgar bridge, seen from the next bridge in the early morning has a calm and simplicity about it which is worthy of a 'great painter's work. Whenever J return to Nelson 1 linger round its streets and on its bridges looking and looking at its beauty. And if J, who am no artist, do this how good would it be if those who are artists could be made aware of the attractions Nelson holds for them if they will come and see.—l am, etc., G.F. Nelson, 28th March.
