YOUNG INDIAN'S FLIGHT

KARACHI TO CROYDON IN 18 DAYS (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, 21st March. Chawla, a young Indian, arrived at Croydon aerodrome at noon .to-day, having flown from Karachi, India, a distance of 5000 miles, in 18 days. Chawla; who is only 17, learned to fly in England. He does not qualify for the prize of £SOO offered by the Aga Khan, which is for the first solo flight by an Indian between India and England, as he was accompanied by a mechanic named Adsey. A message from New Delhi, however, states that the Indian Government is taking steps to award him a special prize of £SOO. AUSTRALIAN DERBY (United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 24th March, 10.40 a.m.) ADELAIDE, 23rd March. Thirteen started in the aerial derby, which resulted : —A. S. Gerrard (Air Force Wapiti) 1; N. N. Birks (AvroAvian) 2; J. A. Jukes (De Haviland Moth) 3, One machine, piloted by R. Watt of Victoria, crashed, but the pilot was not hurt.

'PLANE CRASHES IN STREET

(Received 24th March, 10.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, 23rd March

A Moth 'plane, piloted by W. J. Powell, crashed in a street at Maroubra, wrecking telephone and electric wire? and narrowly missing a motor car. The engine had stalled, and the machine had insufficient way on to reach a neighbouring space where a safe landing might have been effected. The pilot therefore had to make the best of the street space offering. The 'plane was wrecked but Powell was pot seriously hurt. ( Linesmen later clearing up, touched a live wire. One was taken to hospital badly burned.
