THE SEAGULL
CARRIER OF CATTLE TICK INFESTED BIRD CAUGHT (By Telegraph—Press Association) BLENHEIM, This Day. Indubitable proof that the seagull harbours the cattle tick was provided by a gull captured on one of the beaches o'f D'Urville Island, Sounds County, a fewdays ago. This bird, which had been noticed to be behaving in a peculiar manner, was easily caught, and on examination was found to be infested with certain insects. These on being sent to the Government Entomologist were identified as the cattle tick. As soon as these facts were known Mr Wright, principal inspector of stock, Wellington, accompanied by Mr Blair, inspector of stock at Nelson and Mr Scott, inspector of stock at Blenheim, paid a visit to the island. Th e stock were examined at various properties, but none of the animals was found to be affected with cattle tick.
At the same time, now that the gull lias been proved to be a carrier of cattle tick the whole question of control has to be viewed in a fresh light, and owners of stock are being advised accordingly.
