FRENCH FLOODS
DAY OF MOURNING
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright)
PARIS, 9th March. To-day is a day of mourning throughout France for the flood victims. Flags are at half-mast, members of the Government have cancelled their public engagements, social ceremonies are postponed, and all broadcasting stations silent.
It is estimated that the damage will reach a sum equivalent to £1G,000,000. Despite the magnitude of the disaster, it is expected that the National Fund and Governmental grants will be .sufficient to repair the damage. Between Montauban and Moissac many people are still marooned on the housetops.
RELIEF OF SUFFERING
PARIS, 10th March
M. Tardieu, at Toulouse, told the press that the state of things in the Hood area resembled the devastated regions after the war, and emphasised that the remedy must be similar. Personal sufferings must be aided with hard cash, peasants housed, and the vine industry helped by the Government.
