TRIAL OF INTELLECTUALS
ALLEGED CONSPIRACY
IN ARMED REVOLT

At Kharkov the trial commenced of 45 intellectuals, including twenty of tho most prominent Ukranian scholars and scientists, oil a charge of counter-revolu-tion. The trial was conducted in’ the Opera House, being staged amidst a blaze of publicity. Tens of thousands wore given an opportunity to see and hear the proceedings, winch arc being filmed ana wirelessly broadcast. It is alleged that the 45 are ringleaders in a conspiracy lo free the Ukraine from the Soviet yoke, including preparation for an armed revolt in tlie coming spring and discussions of plans to assassinate Stalin and Verosliilov, and receiving funds for the purpose from Poland and Russians in Paris and Berlin.
Sergo Yefremov, head of the Ukraine Academy of Science, is accused of being head of tlie conspirators and using tlie Academy of Science as tlie headquarters.
