WOMEN AS JOCKEYS

INCIDENT AT STEEPLECHASE

DECISION OF.HUNT CLUB

LONDON. 19th January

"I think that the rule which does not permit women to ride in steeplaeheses will be altered soon," says Miss Jean Sariday, commenting on the National Hunt Club's decision that The Breezes, the horse which she mounted and rode to the finish of the White Lodge Steeplechase, after the jockey had been thrown, was not entitled to second place, presumably because the race was completed by a woman. "It is a pity that women are not allowed to compete with men, not so much on racecourses as in hunt or point-t"-point races," she said. "I do not suppose I am equal to men riders, but I would like to compete with them, because it is very exciting." Miss Sanday regularly rides her father's horses', training them for gallops and schooling them over hurdles.
