MOMENTOUS CRISIS
CHURCH OF ENGLAND
CONFLICT WITH STATE
MAY LEAD TO DISESTABLISH MENT
(United Proas Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright)
LONDON', 3rd February
The "Daily News" says that the Church of England faces a momentous crisis in the Church Assembly on Wednesday when, arising from the House of Commons' rejection of the Prayer Hook, the Archbishop of York proposes the appointment of a commission to enquire into the relations of Church and State and determine how far the principle of the Church's inalienable right to formulate and express its faith in Christ can be effectively applied in present circumstances. The Bishop of Durham supports the Archbishop of York.
Evangelical churchmen are opposing the motion, fearing that it will lead to "slippery slop" disestablishment. The Bishop of Durham, who is leading the disestablishment campaign within the Church, admits that the motion will disclose such a conflict between Church and State, as must compel a drastic alteration of their present relations, and may even require legal separation. ____^__
