EMPTY HOUSES IN AUCKLAND

STATE LOANS TO CEASE

AUCKLAND, 3rd February. Owing to the number of empty houses in Auckland no further Government loans for the building of homes will be made till the situation improves. This announcement is contained in a communication from the State Advances Department. The opinion expressed locally is that the public should have been given a warning.

STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER

WELLINGTON", This Day. Sir Joseph Ward has issued a statement regarding Government loans for building homes which was evoked by the announcement from Auckland that owing to the number of empty houses no further loans will be made for the present. The Prime Minister says that, while the department brings houses which have been thrown on its hands to the notice of applicants and tries to dispose of them first, each application is treated on its merits and if the circumstances justify it an application will be dealt with in flie usual manner.
