APPLE EXPORT
PICKING COMMENCED
PROMISE OF GOOD CROP
The gathering of the apple crop for the export season commenced this week and is about four days earlier than last season. The first variety to be picked is .the Gravenstein, to be followed by Cox's Orange. The exportable crop generally promises to be in excess of last season, when about 608,000 cases were sent out of tie district. This total will probably be exceeded by about 10 per cent, this year. Notwithstanding the wet weather earlier in the season the crops are developing quite up to time, and possibly will be a. few days earlier than last year, and if the present fine weather continues from now on the fruit ought to be equal to any yet exported. Cox's are not being pushed forward quite as early as last season. There are some very nice crops of this variety maturing. Up to the end of February of last year approximately 7000 cases' of fruit were received for export over the Nelson whaif. This quantity will probably be exceeded this month. Heavier consignments during this period are sent forward fron Mapua and Motueka, as more Cox's ind Worcester Pearmain are grown in tlese localities.
