For twelve months ended 31st December, 1929, the total amount of revenue of the port was £2242,19s 3d, compared with £2451 19s lOd for the previous vear. The total number of steamers entered and left the port for the month was 28, with a total in registered tonnage of 2248 tons, while for the previous December there were 31 steamers, with a total in registered tonnage of 1968. The quantity of fruit, calculated in computed bushels, passed outwards from the port for the month was 3019, compared with 8168 for the previous corresponding month. This snortage, of some 5000 bushels, had a depreciative effect upon the amount of revenue. A good deal of work, other than that of the usual wharf business, has been carried out since your last meeting, as follows: Construction and repairs to foreshore seawall, repairs and grading, etc., to wharf road; repairs with concrete and patching with asphalt to goods shed floor; shifting two sets of leading beacons rendered necessary owing to further extension of the sand spit; whitewashing the interior of all goods sheds: painting, tarring and a number of other jobs. Everything is now in order for the export fruit season, including the construction of the room to be used by the officers of the Agricultural Department, for the examination of fruit, and the four other canvas curtains, each 20ft by 12ft, have been procured for the open shed. The work of scraping marine growth from the understrueture of the wharf will require to be attended to shortly, as well as some repairs to copper sheathing.
