CHANNEL TUNNEL
STATEMENT BY MR MACDONALD (United Press Association.—By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) United Service LONDON, 12th February. Mr Ramsay MacDonald, who was Premier in 1924 when the last effort was made to obtain Government sanction to a Channel tunnel, revealed in an interview with the “Daily Mail” that it war not only military considerations which the Committee of Imperial Defence then considered, but also a carefully prepared economic memorandum, which influenced the committee’s decision as much as the opinions of the military representative Air MacDonald explained that'before calling the Defence Committee he asked members of the Channel Tunnel Committee if they would continue to press for the tunnel if the military opposed it, and they said no, therefore .the project was not" pursued. It was absolutely untrue to say he accepted the military objections. lie personally always favoured the tunnel and was surprised to find the opposition so strong, lie was prepared to participate in any reconsideration of the subject.
