The final day at Trentham has all ther elements lor good shooting and there are prospects for a close struggle for 'the championship. Although several have possible chances, under the ’ conditions that obtain, there should not be any great changes in the top posi- ! tions. ' ’ f ■’' The'popular fancy lies between Masefield and James, mainly on account of their experience and temperament. Masefield entered the ranks of compei titive shooting in 1904 and won the Belt and grand aggregate twice, was third in Sydney King’s competition in 1927 and in. the final hundred at Bisley in 1910. He represented New Zealand " against Australia on several occasions and made top score against New South Wales in 1910. He was captain of the team last year, and is going to Melbour this year. James was shooting for Wellington Navals in 1904, and like Masefield has attended every meeting held at Tren- • tham. He won the Belt in 1913 and • has secured the Grand and Trentham aggregates on several occasions. He won the Victorian grand aggregate in 1909, was second in the Sydney King’s competition in 191 l and fifth on another occasion, 3 points down. He went to Bisley in 1911 and made the top score in the Colopore Cup. He has won the Wairarapa championship twice, also the Hawkes Bay championship. Ballinger commenced in 1910. He won the Wairarapa championship in 1926, also-the north Wairarapa. He has won the Petone Club championship four times and has been in the King’s fifty ; at Trentham for the last four years, filling tenth place on one occasion. s There are 85 teams of five men each competing for the District Challenge Shield at ranges of 500 and 600 yards.
