NEW FOOTBRIDGE
OVER MAITAI IN HALIFAX STREET The footbridge over the Maitai in Halifax street has now been completed and the added convenience will no doubt bo appreciated by the residents of the area served by the bridge. The structure is a suspension bridge 94 feet in length. The concrete decking is an innovation in the construction of bridges of this type, A considerable amount of work has had to be done on the approaches. The bridge was above the level of the street on the baths side and below it on the other. The necessary excavation and filling lias been carried out and incidentally a considerable improvtmeatto the street on the Wood side has been effected by the work. The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) informed a “Mail” reporter today that the bridge was built with a camber to decrease the length of the' approaches. It had to be built well up because of flood and had it been made level a great deal of additional work on the approaches would have been necessary. The present piers permit of the bridge being widened if ever that becomes necessary. A footpath has been constructed on the Wood side' of the bridge giving access to it If the bridge had been built in line with Halifax street it would have had to be two and a half times as long os the‘present structure.
