SUTER ART GALLERY

NEW PICTURES

The Suter Art Gallery has recently been enriched by the accession of a number of valuable pictures, and ten of these are being exhibited this week for the first time. First in point of interest are two watercolours by living English artists of the front rank, namely Russell Flint and F. Brangwyn, both Royal Academicians. These pictures were purchased with funds derived from the Besley bequest and were selected by two of the Trustees who were lately visiting England. Flint's picture, entitled "Athene's Lemon Wrap," portrays a partly nude figure on an expanse of sand with the sea and distant mountains in the background. "An Eastern Port" by Brangwyn was painted off the Moroscan coast. A considerable number of pictures of varying merit were bequeathed to the Gallery by the late Mr and Mrs 8. B. White. Some of them are of considerable value find foremost among them are some landscapes by John Gully, including an exceptionally fine one of Mount

Egmont. Mr S. B. White used to relate that Gully, after selling this to him, used to call at his house from time to time to examine it again, as the artist always considered it as one of his best pieces of work. Of other pictures in the bequest, "Venice" by E. Pritchett, "A Snow Scene" by 0. Jacobson, "The Old Minster" and "The Swollen Brook" by a painter whose name cannot be clearly deciphered, are all worthy of study. During the holiday season the Gallery will be open to the public all day.
