MR HUDSON'S OFFER TO MR BLACK

On Tuesday last, Mr Walter Nicholson, on behalf of Mr Hudson, wrote as follows to Mr G. C. Black: "1 understand that you have made application for the use of the Institute building on Tuesday evening, the 13th Inst., for your political address and that by reason of the prior engagement thereof you may be embarrassed in being unable to procure a suitable hall for your final address, Mr Hudson desires me to state that he is willing to share the Institute building on the I.3th inst. with you, both of you speaking there that evening and on the following terms: (J) The cost of hire to be shared equally; (2) Each speaker to confine his address to one hour; (3) The first speaker to have the right of reply for say i"> minutes; (4) You and he to toss for places', that is, the winner of the toss to have the option of speaking first or second. "Mr Hudson regrets his inability to address or write you personally as his time is- fully taken up. I shall be glad to have your early reply."

On Thursday, Mr Basil V. Colin (honorary secretary) replied as *follows: "I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the tith inst. addressed to Mr Black with reference to the Institute building and Mr Hudson's offer concerning the use thereof on the night before the poll.

"It is regretted that Mr Hudson's offer was not communicated to Mr Black at an earlier rate, as the itinerary that lias been arranged for the United Party candidate precludes his accepting, at this late hour the proposed arrangement.''
