(By Telegraph—Special to “The Mail")

CHRISTCHURCH,' 27th October. It is understood that L. A. Pine will ride Silver Paper in the Stewards’ Handicap. Phillippie has been striding along freely in useful tasks lately. He w T as allowed to drcjp out of the Ngw Zealand Cup, but he inay carry G. D. Greenwood’s colours with distinction in some of the minor events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Meeting. Commendation was restricted to useful pace work at Riccarton this morning. Although he has been in work for some time, he is not nearly at his best yet, and he may not be ready to show his real fprm until the season is well advanced. In the meantime he looks in good health.

Golden Armour has come into favour for the Stewards’ Handicap during the last few days. This four-year-old Leighton mare showed useful hack form last season, winding up with two wins at Riccarton in the autumn. She has done some useful work lately without showing anything of special note. She is a smart galloper, though the Stewards’ Handicap represents a better class than she has tackled so far.

Crown Area has many warm admirei's for the Stewards’ Handicap, and following on his rifiining at TVentham, where lie showed up in the Shorts Handicap, he has come in for strong support for the Riccarton sprint. At Riccarton to-day Pink Note and Hoylake were companions over a mile which occupied 1.45 4-5. Pink Note, acting Well in the heavy ground, was four lengths in front at the finish, his effort being a very attractive one. Rapier and Rotor covered a mile and a quarter in 2.14. They showed a lot of speed in the early stages, reeling off the first six furlongs in 1.17 1-5, while the last half mile occupied 56 4-ssec. Rotor was a length in front at the finish, and seemed to revel in the going. Beacon Light galloped seven furlongs, moving freely. He looks well after his two races at Trentham. Footfall and Star Stranger were companions over a mile and a quarter. They kept close company all the wav, Star Stranger having the advantage of half a length at the winning post. The gallop occupied 2.16, After the gallop Footfall was found lo be lame, and subsequent examination showed one of his fore legs filled. The extent of the injury is not known, but as it was realised it would prevent his Cup preparation being continued, his withdrawal was quickly decided on.

Iniperiinenco, with Prickles as a mate for the last, six furlongs, covered a mile iti 1.46 1-5. Prickles was slightly in front- at the end of a good gallop.

Papereha.se occupied 1.35 1-5 over seven furlongs without being unduly bustled at Urn finish. Full Feather strode round to the mile post at a useful pace, and then ran home half a mile in 52 2-sscc.
