GENERAL ELECTION

THE NELSON SEAT CANDIDATES’ AIEETINGS MR H. ATMORE Mr Harry Atmore addressed a meeting of 33 electors a't Opouri Valley Ilall, Marlborough, on Saturday evening, when he received an enthusiastic hearing. Mr Arthur Ilebbetd was voted to tho chair, and referred to* Mr Atmore’s “most satisfactory” services when he formerly represented them in Parliament. Mr Atmore dealt with the political situation as it affected the farmers’ interests, and lm stressed the fact- that the president of the. Dominion Farmers’ Union (Mr Polsou) was a candidate against the Government in the Stratford seat. Mr Poison was very strong in his criticism of the Government’s policy or “want of policy” in regard to land settlement, and lie had predicted that over 50 per cent, ot the farmers would vote against the Government. Mr Atjnore said about £40,000,000 had been borrowed under the State Advances scheme without adding ono penny in taxation, and Sir Joseph Ward’s plans lor getting more money Tor a land settlement measure would not add a farthing to the burden of taxation, but would give struggling settlers the financial help which they sorely needed at the present time, and further it would make foe a large permanent increase in our production of wealth. (Applause.) The same class of criticism now being levelled at these proposals were used in an attempt to kill the State Advances Bill when Sir Joseph Ward introduced it in tlie period of Liberal rule but the Act has been such a pronounced success that even the Reformers’ boast of its good' work. (Applause.) The candidate said he had been pleased to meet many old friends and supporters in the Rai and Pelorus Valleys, who had been associated with him in the early days of tho settlement and he recalled the struggle for a most necessary bridge in that period.
