TOURNAI CATHEDRAL
SERIOUS FIRE Unitod Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright Australian Press Association BRUSSELS, 25th October. The famous Romanesque Cathedral oi Tournai is afire. It contains pictures by Rubens and Jordaens. Apparently the outbreak was due to the carelessness of workmen restoring the roof, which is now fully ablaze. The damage is enormous, and it is feared that the stone vaulting may collapse into the nave of the church. The cathedral is often considered the choicest architectural treasure of Belgium, owing to its five graceful towers, which it was feared would collapse. It is is now hoped (hat this danger has been passed. A rainstorm helped the firemen to extinguish the fire. BUILDING SAVED PARIS, 26th October. Tournai Cathedral was saved, though considerably damaged. Troops helped the clergy to remove treasures.
