England’s position became worse on resumption, when Tyldesley fell for 15 through taking Grimmett cheaply, being caught by Hack, and Sutcliffe, whose batting bad been delightfully free and masterful, played Whitfield on. He made 76 in 104 minutes. The Englishmen’s showing was on the whole unimpressive against, the South Australian attack, which, did not appear dangerous. Light showers caused an adjournment for a few minutes before tea. Attractive cricket was played by Hammond and Mead whose placing was excellent. Hammond was brilliant. The spectators continued to seo bright cricket from Mead and Hammond, and both scored freelv, punching holes in the field. After his early success in dismissing Tyldesley, Grimmett was ineffective, both batsmen placing him confidently. Mead gave a chance at 27. Applause greeted Hammond’s arrival at 80, at which he became top scorer. The partnership greatly improved England’s position, 100 being added in 73 minutes. Hammand’s aggression brought him a century in 127 minutes.. The batsmen had assumed mastery over tho attack, which at its best was only mediocre. After a partnership yielding 154, Mead was dismissed, by Grimmett who. took a brilliant catch off hi? own bowling just before stumps were drawn.
