OVERWHELMED
BRITISH AMATEUR GOLF
(From Our Own Correspondent)
LONDON, 6th September. •' i British golfers have had to bear many humiliations in recent'years but none. so acute as that caused by the overwhelming defeat of the amateur team which opposed (lie Americans in Chicago for the Walker Cup. Of the four foursomes arid eight singles only one win was recorded, this being by T. A. Torranee over "Chick" Evans. No one here expected the team to be successful, but no one expected them to give such a dreadful display. Someone must be blamed and there has been an agitation not only to sack the players but tiie committee" who selected them. The committee, it is said, comprises a lot of elderly gentlemen who are out of touch with modern golf and they are accused of choosing players who have always failed in trie past instead . of searching for new talent. But this criticism will not bear examination. St. Andrews were faced with the fact that Roger Wcthered, Cyril Tolley and-Sir Ernest Hoklerness, the three leading players, declined to take part in the tour and they attempted to build up the team from the best material left. Tlie defeat can neither be excused nor explained away. America at the present time have the better golfers and on their own course they are almost invincible, indeed, it is very doubtful whether at any period of British golf it would have been possible to have sent over a side capable of heating the present American team.. All sorts of plans have been suggested to prepare for the next match two years lienor*, Some of them are excellent, but inasmuch as they demand that young players should undergo a long course of intensive training they will not bo carried out. We have never done this for fl.'iy contest and it is most improbable that we shall ever start.
