DISPUTE BETWEEN LOCAL BODIES

An important point regarding the, agreements between local bodies for U<« .iiitiiitetiMiicii of roads under the 'Main Highways Act came before Mr Justice Ostler at Ihe last sitting of the Supreme Court at liivcmirgill. The roads i. u question were Merivulo street and Main street, Otabuliu, and there was an"agreement between the Otautau Town Board and Wallace County Council to maintain then).

The latter body contended that the passing of the Main Highways Act, 1922, and the declaration of the River-tou-Otautau road as a main way had (he effect of over-riding the agreement, as the streets in question were part of a main highway. The Otautau Town Hoard claimed 'from Wallace County Council £B9 lis 6d, alleged to be clue under contract by defendant council to pay proportion of tiie cost of the maintenance of tho main road in the town of Otautau.
