ROME, 9th August. ' It is officially stated that submarine Fl 4 carried a crew of 27 officers and men. Some were drowned, but the majority were asphyxiated. It is revealed that when 78 feet from the ocean bed a message was received from the submarine stating—" Gas is advancing; we are dying." A naval doctor was the first to enter the submarine, and although equipped with a gas mask he lost consciousness owing to the denseness of the gas, which had to be forced out by strong air currents.
Eight of the crew were found in the stern, four in the turret, and the re mainder in the prow.
