CAWTHRON INSTITUTE
SIR JOHN RUSSELL'S VISIT Speaking of the work of the Cawthron Institute, Sir John Russell, director of the Rothamsted Experimental Station, England told a "Mail" reporter last night that he was much pleased * again to meet Mr Rigg, who was an old Rothamsted student, and to observe the soil survev work he was doing, and his experiments in the use of fertilisers. He was also interested to see what was being done under the Empire Marketing Board's scheme for the Rothamsted Station had been taking part in the same work. He was further interested in Dr. Curti's's -mvcological work. Sir John spoke of Mr Davies' very beautiful ' photographs of the characteristic vegetation and scenery associated with the different soil tvpes in the South Island, and also his collection of photographs of the vegetation of the Soutli Island, a record that, in Sir John's opinion, would not fail to have the greatest value in the future. • •_. The visitor was taken to see the Vitetta's glass houses where the steam sterilisation experiments had proved very efficient. Steam sterilisation, he said, was discovered at Rothamsted but many of the methods used in Nelson were new to him and were an improvement on the usual methods elsewhere. Steam sterilisation was very largely used by growers in England.
