(By Telegraph.—press Association
WELLINGTON, This Day
The. lack of care shown by young children when crossing -"streets; and the little heed paid tp ,: the,; warning given by their, parents, were commented' upon by the Coroner, Mr W. J. Riddell, S.M., yesterday, at the inquest on. a four-year-old girl;, Alice Dorothy Thompson, who was knocked down by a motor lorry, in Adelaide RoacL; Newtown. . : William John Mason,; the driver of •the lorry, said, that he was-on the correct side of the road and travelling at nine or ten miles an hour. ~ He saw two cars parked, on the side of "the r6ad,,but did not see the girl'until she ran out very fast in front of the lorry. Leonard Harewood, a schoolboy, described the accident' and said that /the motor lorry was travelling atl'medium speed. Wheh he' first saw it, the lorry was fairly close to the little girl. The driver swerved. slightly and applied his brakes, and pulled up very quickly. The' girl, however, was struck and' one of the wheels passed Over her. Dr. Burton stated that he examined deceased, and formed the opinion that death was due either to* ,a fracture of the skull or a dislocated neck. ;
The .finding'was to the effect that deaith was caused thrbush injuries' received through being accidentally knocked down by a motor lorry. The evidence showed that no blame was attachable to the driver of the motor lorry.
