RUGBY MATCH OTAGO V. BAYS The Otago touring team met the Bays Union on the local ground on Wednesday afternoon and defeated thorn by 23 points to 3. Weather conditions were ideal and the attendance, for a midweek match, exceeded expectations. Tlie Otago team was captained by Marsden, and Clark filled a similar position tor Bays. When the teams took the field, attired in blue and brown respectively, it was very noticeable that Otago carried much more weight than the Bays. For tho first half-hour the visitors appeared to be all out, their concerted movements and clean handling of the ball being an. education to local footballers. Otago was playing with clock-work precision and within a minute or two swept through the Bay defence 'for' a nippy try, near the corner. Leyden started Ottrey, Niven and McConnell up the field, the leather travelling'in to Niven and out again to Olliver for the final dash. Niven converted.—Otia-jo 14, Bays 3. A further rush by Otagp followed. Jackman came through at full tilt. Lunn failed to stop the onslaught'and a score was only averted by Olliver getting offside. Otago rattled away on Bays' defences, Leyden, Olliver and McPherson working hard. Play moved to Bays' quarters, Lash, Clark and Reeves being responsible for the movement. Holyoake and Hickmott attempted to> carry on but were Overpowered. A free kick to Bays gave Clark a fine opportunity to score; bitt he missed with a poor shot. McConnell gathered in. the leather and in company with McPherson galloped to Bays' 25, where the latter was stopped by Lunh. Operations eased to neutral ground, from where Jackman ! got possession, the ball travelling to Niven and then to touch. Clark received the oval from a scrum and dashed off. Ottrey intercepted his pass and sent Davis for a skip down the line. Later Scott with the assistance of Lash returned the ball to Otago territory. Bays commenced the second spell with a strong attack, Kirk being particularly busy. A concerted move by the Otago forwards paralysed the opposition. Donnelly, Stewart, and Marsden making the initial move. The ball passed, tq McPherson and thence to Leyden for the final dash. No goal.—Otagb i 7, Bays 3. The Bay backs got going Scott, Hickmott, Stevens, and Kirk handling the ball—a promising attempt spoilt by a knock on. Otago returned in a forward rush to browns' 85; Clark, Kirk, and Lunn eventually breaking up the attack. Play was taken tip field by Kirk. Clark, Holyoake, and B'pnsemann in turn took possession. Barber kicked high and placed Otago in a dangerous position; but ! McPherson smartly slipped in and cleared. At this stage Bays were having the best of the deal, though their efforts proved fruitless. A passing rush, from the 25 mark, by Lunn, Scott, Stevens, and Lash broke clown before the splendid defensive tactics of Otago. Play eased and Becker got away but spoilt the move by holding on too long. Niven marked from the return kick by Stevens and narrowly missed a score. From a scrum in Bays' 25 Jackman secured and dashed over. No goal.— Otago 20, Bays 3. A forward rush to Bays' quarters by Marsden, Davis, and O'Neill placed the home team in a tight corner and Lunn was compelled to force. Barber received an injury to his leg and was replaced by Waldron. Following a penalty against the Bays, Davis picked up, from the loose and dashed off for the last score of the day. No goal resulted. — Otago 23, Bays 3. Clark took the ball to Otago's quarters and was grassed in the 25. Benseinann next handled the leather; but a mark by Ottrey checked the movement. A few minutes later the whistle sounded time. Father Carmine controlled the match. VISITORS ENTERTAINED The visitors were entertained at a dance in the Institute Hall, a very pleasant evening being spent by all.'
