ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME
EMPIRE ATHLETES RETURN TO ENGLAND LONDON, 7tli August. The Olympic competitors were enthusiastically welcomed at the Liverpool street station on arrival from Amsterdam, by cheering crowds shouting “Well done Empire,” “Who said the Empire is a back number?” Lord Burghley, Lowe, Butler and Abrahams were nearly mobbed, Lord Burghley saying that he would rather face a hundred champions than such a crowd, He escaped those wishing to shoulder him by sprinting. to. the exit, e. The Canadians and Australians were also warmly .greeted. The New Zealand women competitors, amusedly admitted reading .the controversy over the strenuousness of sports 'for woipcn. They said it was absolute rot to think that a'woman ruins her health by competing in harmless sports. We. were pretty well whacked at the end of strenuous racing but men 1 suffered similarly. Women wore just as hardy as men.
