SWIMMING AND SCULLING PEARCE HAS EASY VICTORY CHARLTON BEATEN BY A TOUCH Unitod Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright Australian Press Association—United Service (Received Bth August, 11.25 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, 7th August. In the 2000 Metres Sculls, quarter finals, Pearce (Australia) beat Saurin (France). Time, 7.42 45. Gunther beat Straka in 7.57 3-5. Collett (Britain) beat Wright (Canada) by three lengths in 7.52. Meyers beat Candeveau in 8.5 3-5. Meyers was not pressed. Pearce on the third successive occasion, did the fastest heat. He had the easiest victory. He won comfortably by 20 lengths, paddling for the greater part of the journey. Saurin, a slightly built, handsome Frenchman, made a tremendous effort at the start in an endeavour to hold Pearce, but the Australian was ahead from the first stroke, striking fortytwo in the first minute, and thereafter settling down to thirty-six, but reducing considerably when victory was assured. Pearce thus entered the semifinals together with the Dutchman Gunther, the Englishman Collett, and the American Meyers. , Nothing short of a miracle or accident can prevent the Australian winning if lie shows anything approaching his present form. Collett is probably the strongest competitor left. Meyers is good, but in no way as strong - , as .Pearce whose electrifying speed off 1 the mark alone is a big asset. Charlton registered his fourth successive swimming second when Takaishi won the heat by a touch. The race was slow but interesting. Takaishi, Costoli and Charlton were practically level throughout. The Japanese led Charlton by a touch with Costoli immediately behind for a couple of hundred maintained the lead until 350 when he and Charlton turned together, but Takaishi won by a fifth of a second. Costoli was five yards back. Tellez and Gordon each were more than a lap behind. Borg, who has never been headed at the' present Olympia, won his heat dashingly by tw'enty yards. Crabbe also had the easiest of(-vie-tories within a fraction of the Swede’s time. ZoriUa easily won Lindsay’s heat The New Zeaiander did not qualify. He swain well but failed to last out the distance.
